- In UTOPIA entwirft Rottenberg mit inszenierten Menschenbildern aus seiner kubanischen Wahlheimat Havanna das Ideal einer vermeintlich perfekten Gesellschaft. Mit viel Einfühlungsvermögen, Humor und satirischer Schärfe entwickelt Rottenberg Einzelporträts und Gruppenbilder. Darsteller sind die Menschen aus seinem Viertel, denen sich das schwierige Leben im immer noch sozialistisch geprägten Alltag in ihre Körper eingeschrieben hat.

- In UTOPIA, in his photographic portrayals of people from his chosen home of Havana, Cuba, Rottenberg creates an ideal of a supposedly perfect society. With tremendous empathy, humour and satirical edge, Rottenberg presents individual portraits and group pictures. Those depicted are people from his neighbourhood and the traces of the difficulties of an everyday life still shaped by socialism can be read from their bodies.

Seit mehreren Jahren fühle ich mich den Menschen und der Kunst Kubas eng verbunden. Davon zeugen die Künstler, die ich aus der Nähe begleite und ihre Werke, die mehrfach in der Kunsthalle HGN und im Berliner Atelierhaus auf Bötzow präsent waren. Sie vermitteln einen lebendigen Eindruck von der Aufbruchsstimmung, die seit einigen Jahren auf Kuba herrscht und die ich mit Freude und Anteilnahme verfolge. Die Annäherung der USA und Kubas in jüngster Zeit hat diesen Prozess noch vorangetrieben, so dass mich die quirlige Atmosphäre Havannas oft an die Zeit in Berlin nach dem Mauerfall erinnert.

Vor allem die Fotografien von Enrique Rottenberg sind es, die mir die habaneros und habaneras lebhaft vor Augen führen, wenn ich nicht selbst in Havanna sein kann. Ich sehe sie mit seinen Augen in ihrer Vielfalt, Schönheit und Widersprüchlichkeit, die durch die Perfektion seiner Foto-Bilder auf den Punkt gebracht werden. Daran sollen sich auch die Besucher der Kunsthalle HGN erfreuen - ¡Bienvenidos a Duderstadt!

For a number of years now I have felt a close connection with the people and the art of Cuba. This is evidenced by the artists I accompany at close quarters, their work shown on multiple occasions at the Kunsthalle HGN and at the Bötzow Atelierhaus in Berlin. They convey a lively impression of the spirit of optimism that has been palpable in Cuba for several years and which I have followed with delight and a sense of participation. The recent rapprochement between the USA and Cuba has given this process fresh impetus and the exuberant atmosphere of Havana often reminds me of Berlin in the immediate aftermath of the fall of the Wall.

It is Enrique Rottenberg's photographs in particular that allow me to vividly see the habaneros and habaneras when I cannot be in Havana myself. I see them through his eyes in all their diversity, beauty and contradictions, captured eloquently in the perfection of his photographic works. This is a pleasure to be shared with visitors to the Kunsthalle HGN - ¡Bienvenidos a Duderstadt!
